I really enjoy the peeling of the onion idea, if you want to go down the linear route. It could be a really interesting form of categorization to position the more superficial projects on the outside layers, where the projects that contain more context would exist on the inside. It seems to be similar to the way a user would comprehend any body of work–investing more time the further they dig.
